A brief history...

Founding Directors

(Seta Neghossian, Pat Ashforth, Lucille, Laurie D’Alessandro at the 1993 Renovation & Ideas show.)

In 1992, a group of six soon-to-be graduates from the Seneca Interior Decorating program realized that they were about to lose their professional social network. Without LinkedIn or an existing association for them to join, the students sought the advice of staff at the college and set out to create a community for decorators. What started as a group of six, quickly grew to 50, then 125 within a year and a half. In 1994, the Certified Decorators’ Association (CDECA) was incorporated as a not-for-profit professional association under a set of core values:

  • Inclusivity & collaboration
  • Continuing education
  • Outreach to students
  • A code of conduct

Over the past 25 years, we’ve evolved with the world around us. In the mid-1990s, we began visiting colleges to inform students about the benefits of membership; this would eventually become our Ambassador Program. In the early 2000s, we changed our name to the Canadian Decorators’ Association and incorporated federally to better serve the community nationwide. In 2008, we hired our first professional management company to efficiently handle administration. In 2017, we become the Decorators & Designers Association of Canada (DDA) to ensure that our name better reflected the work of our members.

Throughout every change in our history, grand or seemingly insignificant, our core values have remained in one form or another.

Our Mission

The Decorators & Designers Association of Canada (DDA) is dedicated to helping our members be the best that they can be for their clients and themselves.
DDA champions decorating and design excellence by setting educational standards and professional development requirements for our members; requiring members to adhere to the DDA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

DDA fosters the growth of the decorating industry in Canada; advocates for the profession on policy matters; and promotes a positive image of the industry through proactive activities and events.

*DDA is a professional association and not a governing body; as such, all matters related to contracts and fees are considered to be strictly between decorator and client.

Accredited members are trained to decorate and design spaces in compliance with our constitutional Bylaws and Code of Ethics. Under the leadership of an inspired Board of Directors and the growing national Membership, DDA is well positioned to move forward with confidence and a plan for the future of our industry.

Important Note: DDA Canada does not regulate the profession of Interior Design nor provide any ability for members to represent themselves as Interior Designers. The profession of Interior Design is regulated at the provincial level in Canada. More information can be found here.
